Refrigerators

A refrigerator repair can be costly more often than your other appliances. This is where I can help. Although people read reviews and ratings, it can be tough buying a refrigerator that looks nice, fits the space, and has a low repair history. The key is to talk to a repairman, neighbor, or friend. This is where you are going to find true information. Also, make sure there is a company in your town that will repair the brand of appliance when it is still in the manufacturer’s warranty. There are many different refrigerators out there to choose from.

Compact and mini-refrigerators are generally cheaper in price. Most times, it is cheaper to replace these with new ones than fixing them. They can be repaired though.
Counter and cabinet depth refrigerators are sometimes, but not always wider than the standard kitchen opening. Before purchasing these, measure the opening. These also offer less room for more cost, but look nice.
Built-In Refrigerators have the compressor system on the top to provide good air flow and cleaner coils, but they are expensive. Remember, if you build cabinetry around a regular side-by-side or top and bottom refrigerator/freezer to make it look like a built-in, just expect the refrigerator to run harder. The compressor systems are generally behind them and need more air flow.

Preventive Maintenance is the key to keep your refrigerators lasting a long time. Be sure to clean the coils at least once a year with a vacuum attachment. If you have animals in your household, clean your refrigerator coils every six months. Remember, clogged coils create heat, and heat causes stress on parts. Broken parts caused by excessive heat can mean expensive repairs! If your refrigerator has a water filter, change them according to the manufacturer’s schedule. It helps your ice maker for the most part. The ice also tastes better. If you are having problems with your ice maker or water system, hold off on the filter replacement. Call or email me for a troubleshoot/repair of the ice maker or water system instead.

Freezers

Freezers are quite simple. You have automatic defrost models which are nice, but seem to be more problematic. Usually these freezers are ‘upright’ models and the retail salesman like to push these more. Very few ‘chest’ freezers have auto defrost, but they are out there. Try to find a salesman that really knows his stuff! Then you have ‘standard’ and ‘chest’ freezers that have no defrost. These freezers, in my experience, seem to have less repairs and are less expensive in price. The only drawback is that you have to shut it down at least once a year and perform a manual defrost.
IMPORTANT TIP: Do not chip the ice off with a sharp object to speed up the process. You can cause a very big and expensive problem by doing so. Most of the time, freezers don’t have external coils to clean. Most of their coils are built into the walls of the cabinet. Just try to keep stuff off the top and sides to let the unit ‘breathe’.

Free Standing Ice Maker Machines

Under-the-counter or free standing ice makers are more complicated. Coils are sometimes harder to get to, but try to keep them clean. Also, run ‘nicklesafe’ ice maker cleaner through the water system per the manufacturer instructions. This is one thing that will prolong your ice maker pump, cutting grid, and evaporator plate life. Anything further than this will require a professional to come and troubleshoot the problem if it is not working correctly.

I troubleshoot and repair most common brands. These include Kenmore, Sears, Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Chambers, Maytag, Caloric, Amana, Jenn Air, Admiral, Roper, Electrolux, Tappan, Frigidaire, GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint, White Westinghouse, LG, Samsung, Sub Zero, plus others.
